Happy Bollywood Monday, peeps! I don't know anything about this clip, really, except that it features Kunika dancing in the rain. Anybody know what movie this is from?
I've been in a theme week mood lately, so let's kick off another. This week it'll be movie trailers. I post a lot of them with my reviews over at the Desuko Movie Spot, but over here I wanted to focus specifically on movies that are so impossible to find that I haven't seen them yet, but totally want to.
This is a vintage Ramsey Brothers horror flick from Bollywood called "Purana Mandir," released in 1984:
This week, I want to feature some new tunes I've been digging. We'll get to the usual pop/rock fare starting tomorrow, but since this is Bollywood Monday, we're going to kick off the week with something new from India. From the forthcoming movie "Dostana," this is Shilpa Shetty doing the short-but-sweet "Shut Up and Bounce":
Time for more Chiru! The man is a force who cannot be stopped, which is why when he says he wants to do Bollywood Monday, we just step aside and let him play through. From the 1989 movie "Rudra Netra," here are Chiru and friends hitting you with "Jet Speed Pillaro":
You know what's worse than a Monday morning? Your first Monday morning after three weeks of vacation. Time to get back to the grind, people. But to make it a little easier, here's some old school elegance (and booty shaking!) courtesy of '60s/'70s Bollywood dance icon Jayshree T.
From the film "Kurukshetra," this is the song "Aap Ka Aana" sung by Mahima Chaudhry and Rakhi Sawant. As a special bonus with this clip, we get subtitles!
A lot of western cultural appropriation goes on in Bollywood films, whether it's clumsy like some of Chiru's stuff, or something more sophisticated. Then there's this, a wholesale reproduction of the lobby shootout from "The Matrix." The film is "Awara Pagal Deewana" (2002), which is actually a remake of "The Whole Nine Yards" (2000):
Another Monday, another Bollywood post. But let's liven things up a little bit with one of our favorite performers here at Desuko HQ, Aishwarya Rai. The song is "Crazy Kiya Re" from the 2006 movie "Dhoom 2." Yeah, baby!
I know that just last week we had another installment of our man Chiru's continuing cinematic adventures, but we just can't resist spotlighting him again. Especially when it's a clip like this. Instead of his usual manly pursuits of dancing or fighting, here he gets down to the manly pursuit of lovin'. Here he is romancing the sari off of Radhika in "Nyayam Kavali" (1981):
After a brief layoff, Bollywood Monday returns! And what better way to welcome it back than with our main man Chiru. And in this clip you get a bonus -- a fight and a song! I believe this is from his big hit film "Gang Leader," but I'm not 100% positive.
I don't have any background at all on this film, except that it's called "Annai Oru Aalayam" and is from 1979. But this is too good not to share. There's some light buddy comedy, some insanely wacky animal hijinks, and this being Bollywood and all, even a catchy song.
The first part establishes the concept:
And part two just brings it on home with a vengeance:
This video is a lot like a platypus -- there's no good reason for it to exist, and yet it does. Here's an utterly batshit insane Bollywood mashup video starring Barak Obama. (Why? Because it's the internet, silly!)
And by "Touch Me," I don't mean The Doors, or Samantha Fox, or even "Rocky Horror." Nope, in this case it's once again the luscious Aishwarya Rai dancing with Hrithik Roshan on "Touch Me" from the 2006 film "Dhoom 2":
(For the record, the playback singers are Kay Kay and Alisha Chinoi.)
Holy shit, I need to see this movie. I don't know what it is (YouTube's pathetic lack of background strikes again), but anything that mixes Bollywood dance numbers, karate fighters, gymnasts and Studio 54 disco decadence has got my vote. Hi-keeba!
This week's Bollywood Monday brings not a movie clip, but a music video. While it's not Bollywood per se, it is a tribute to it -- the video of Hard Kaur's new single, "Bombay Deewana":
Well... another week, another Bollywood Monday. This is the incredibly gorgeous Aishwarya Rai dancing/lip synching in the film "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" (1999). I believe the song is "Nimbuda," sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy.
