Jukebox Friday: More Sounds From the Grab Bag.

It's an eclectic jukebox mix this week. Here we go...

How about a little Eurodisco from Luv? This is "U O Me Waldolala":

Some sweet, sweet swing from the Cats and the Fiddle, doing "Killing Jive":

The Penatrators go New Wave-ish with "Shopping Bag":

It's some good ol' fashioned country with "Teenage Boogie" by Webb Pierce:

Finally, here's something brand new -- "Emily Paints" by The Deadly Syndrome":

Jukebox Friday: New Music Week Edition.

Okay, so doing a Jukebox Friday in a week that already feature nothing but music seems redundant. That's why this one will just be a collection of other fine new videos that I didn't get to earlier in the week.

The editing on this one drives me crazy, but the tune is rockin'. Here's some poppy girlpunk from Hunter Valentine called "Break This":

I like the video more than the song, but I have to admit that the song's grown on me. It's "I'm Good, I'm Gone" by Lykke Li:

Here's a message for all you gay marriage haters out there. You can't stop the love, people. It's Melange Lavonne with "I Got You":

Finally, here's a brilliant mindfuck of a video. It's "Carmencita" by Devendra Banhart. The lyrics are in Spanish, the concept is pure mistranslated old school Bollywood -- and there are even a couple of surprise guest stars. That's truly all you need:

Jukebox Friday: Scary Movie Week Edition.

Happy Halloween, 'Tubers! What makes scary movies scary? Well, it's a lot of things, but the music certainly plays a big part in it. Here are some prime scary movie scores.

John Carpenter composed the score to his breakout hit "Halloween" himself:

"Tubular Bells" by new age composer Mike Oldfield is better known as the theme song to "The Exorcist":

A few years ago, Philip Glass composed a score for a reissue of the Bela Lugosi version of "Dracula." This is an excerpt:

Jukebox Friday: Star Wars Edition.

From Japanese television in 1983, here's an orchestra tackling John Williams' famous score. But stick around and you'll get to see some guest stars, too -- as well as some swell retro Japanese TV commercials.

Jukebox Friday: Trek Tunes.

Finally, let's wrap up Trek Week with a host of music videos. First, it's The Firm's classic "Star Trekkin'":

"Mr. Spock" by Nerf Herder:

"The Picard Song" by DarkMateria:

"Where's Captain Kirk?" by Spizzenergi:

"Doomsday Machine" by Vulcan Freedom Fighters:

And finally there's this thing, which manages to mash up William Shatner, John Donne and "The Stripper":

Jukebox Friday: Vote Vinnie.

Enough of this Obama/McCain madness. Vote Stigma in '08!

Speaking of Agnostic Front, here's the video for their latest single, "For My Family":

Jukebox Friday: Counting with Feist.

Just a simple jukebox post today. Here is Feist's video for her song "1 2 3 4":

And here she is doing the "Sesame Street" version:

Jukebox Friday: More Improbable Covers.

The internet is lousy with clips of musicians taking a stab at other people's songs. Here are some more.

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain tackles the theme from "Shaft":

A Thai karaoke version of "Dragostea Din Tei" (better known as the "Numa Numa" song):

(Other versions of this are also available in Vietnamese, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian and Spanish).

A one-man-band version of AC/DC's "Back in Black":

And finally, the horror that is Kidz Bop. (I post this mainly to point out the insane intensity of the kid at 2:37):

Jukebox Friday: Another Trip to Japan.

What can I say? I'm a sucker for Japanese music. Here's another batch of videos:

"Love Message" by The Possible:

"Robo Kiss" by W, a Morning Musume side project:

And just to show that there's more to popular music in Japan than bouncy girl groups (not that there's anything wrong with that at all), here from 1965 is Akira Fuse and the Blue Comets with "Do the Clam":

Jukebox Friday: Improbable Covers Edition.

Who doesn't love a good cover song? Especially from odd sources. Too wit:

Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" done in 8-bit style by Uner:

The great San Francisco drag tribute band The SheGees do "Jive Talkin'":

The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra does a great spin on Outkast's "Hey Ya!":

A bunch of cellists rip into Europe's '80s classic "The Final Countdown":

I'm not even going to tell you what this one is supposed to be. See if you can guess. It's from a Thai karaoke disc, with a video that apparently has nothing to do with the original English lyrics of the song:

Jukebox Friday: Triumphant Return Edition.

We're back. Word! And just in time for the weekend, too. Here are some tunes:

The angularly New Wave "Girl You Want" by Devo:

The charmingly vintage "Did You Have to Rub It In" by The Hi-5:

The whimsically parodic "What You Know About Math?" by TI84 feat. -E:

And finally, the jaw-dropping "Caribbean Moon" by Kevin Ayers:

Jukebox Friday: World Tour.

It's vacation time again, which means this will be the last post here for two weeks or so. (Check back in the last week of August for some new content.) While some folks get to travel all sorts of places on their vacation, thanks to The Man, we won't be wandering far from the Desuko Compound. But that doesn't mean we can't travel vicariously through our favorite music videos. Here are groups hailing from some of the places we won't be visiting this year:

Great Britain ("American Boy" by Estelle feat. Kanye West):

Sweden ("Diggiloo Diggiley" by the Herreys):

The Netherlands ("You're the Greatest Lover" by Luv):

Iceland ("Love Message From Overseas" by Leoncie):

China (unknown song by Tale Crasher):

Jukebox Friday: Random Shite.

I've got a headache today, so I can't really be bothered to think up a theme. Enjoy this random assortment of songs instead.

M.I.A., "Paper Planes":

A song by the Trons, a self-playing robot band:

"Dunkin' Bagels" by the Slim Gaillard Trio:

Millie Jackson's "Phuck U Symphony":

Jukebox Friday: A Long Time Ago in a Country Far, Far Away.

In the past on Jukebox Friday, we've treated you to old vintage clips. Other times, we've treated you to sounds from around the world. This week, we've combined the old and the international, and passed the savings on to you!

From Mexico, Los Hooligans kick up their heels with "Despeinada":

From the Soviet Union(!) it's a group called Песняры (Pesnyary) performing the song "Косил Ясь" (sorry, I don't know the English translation) for state television:

The Japanese girl group Triangle does "Triangle Love Letter":

From Hong Kong, Fong Po Po sings a paean to "Active Youth":

And to finish off with something completely different, it's the German group Kraan (and their pet mimes) doing "Vollgas Ahoi":

Jukebox Friday: Vacation Edition.

It's time for a short summer hiatus here on the 'Tube, so this will be our last post until mid-July or so. To tide you over until then, here are a collection of oddball videos.

From 1983, the Swedish band Ubangi does "The Little Cat and the Dirty Dog":

Addictive, ain't it? That's why I present it to you again. Here's Ubangi doing that song live on Swedish TV:

Viking metal roolz! Here's Oort, hailing from Estonia, with their song "Öised Orjad":

"I Feel Happy" by the Super Preachers:

Zlad has been called a musical version of Borat. You be the judge. Here is "I Am the Anti-Pope" (banned by the Eurovision Song Contest!):

And finally, a silly fan video for Wesley Willis' "Rock 'n' Roll McDonald's":

Friday, June 20, 2008

Jukebox Friday: Yestersongs.

Here's some more REALLY old school jams to start off your weekend...

Gordon Terry's live performance of "It Ain't Right":

Before "Pulp Fiction" there was the much crappier "A Swingin' Affair." Dick Dale and his Del-Tones do their familiar "Misirlou" in a bad movie:

In fabulous living color, Wilbert Harrison takes us to "Kansas City":

Oh, Scopitone gods.... You've given us such wonderful and goofy gifts. Like this early music video for Brook Benton's "Mother Nature, Father Time":

More Scopitone fun -- Donna Theodore singing what deserves to become a drag queen classic, "Femininity":

Jukebox Friday: The Now Sound.

Some hot new tracks for your summer listening enjoyment....

Gnarls Barkley, "Going On":

Mystery Jets, "Two Doors Down":

Jukebox Friday: Nicki's Way.

Today we salute unknown rocker Nicki Rose, in the name of unknown rockers everywhere. Rock on, Nicki! You truly are an electric warrior at heart:

"Electric Warrior":

"Battle in the Sky (The Desperate)":

"The Rock Stars (Nicki's Way)":
